Medical/Psychiatric Support Services (MPS)
Medication Support services have been provided by
Youth for Change since 1998. Starting with a single doctor, then
growing into a full medical team of licensed medical personnel
including Psychiatrist (MD) and Registered Nurses (RN) and a specially
trained administrative coordinator that we have today. Our program is
based on the highest standards of medical and psychiatric practice.
Med Support services are offered to all children, adolescents and their
families who are enrolled in a variety of Youth for Change programs, up
to the age of 18. These services include consultation, diagnostic
assessment, psychotropic medication treatment and psychotherapy.
Youth for Change Med Support program staff are dedicated to providing
quality services based on the highest community standards set forth by
the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. Our
services include an in-depth and on-going psychiatric diagnostic
process by our child and adolescent psychiatrist. The child and
adolescent psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis
and the treatment of disorders of thinking, feeling and/or behavior
affecting children, adolescents and their families.
The "Initial" psychiatric evaluation includes a rigorous review of
historical and current assessment background of the client. It also
provides a clinically engaging assessment of the youth, a thorough
diagnostic evaluation and development of a treatment plan.
In some cases, the evaluation may include review of medical reports
from other licensed medical personnel such as results from physical
exams, psychological testing, laboratory tests, other medical tests
such as an electrocardiogram (EKG) or electroencephalogram (EEG) and
consultations with other specialists. Based on this comprehensive
psychiatric assessment and diagnostic evaluation, a treatment plan will
be developed, that may or may not include the use of psychotropic
medication. This comprehensive treatment plan involves care customized
according to patient needs and values and the promotion of family
participation and empowerment.
The"Follow Up" psychiatric evaluations with the youth are provided at
least monthly and more frequently if needed. Consultation appointments
are scheduled as well for adult clinical update. Working together,
family, youth and professionals can collaborate effectively in support
of individualized, strengths-based, culturally competent treatment.
Med Support staff work closely with the psychiatrist and other YFC
staff members to ensure quality care and psychiatric treatment for our
YFC youth. Our nurses are dedicated to offering support, networking,
advocacy and education for our children and their families.
Knowing that every child is unique, it is the intent of our Med Support
program to offer services customized to the special needs of our youth
and their families. It is also our heartfelt intent that YFC clients
will find relief, joy and hope in the discovery process of their unique
selves, strengths and potential during our work together.
